STEM OPT Extension Overview | OPTnation

The STEM OPT extension allows some students with science, technology, engineering, or math degrees to apply to extend their post-completion OPT authorization. Students with STEM degrees and currently in their 12-month OPT period should review the eligibility requirements, application timeline, and instructions below.


Procedure to Apply For the STEM OPT Extension:

STEM OPT Extension Qualifications:

Have a degree in an eligible STEM field from a Student and Exchange Visitor Program-certified school that is accredited when the student submits their STEM OPT extension application to USCIS.

Provides the student with formal training and learning objectives.

Time Limitation:

Work a minimum of 20 hours per week per employer.

Eligibility:

Once you are in the 60-day grace period following completion of OPT, you become ineligible to apply for a STEM extension of OPT.

Students may not apply for STEM OPT extensions during the 60-day grace period following an initial (usually 12-month) period of post-completion OPT.

Have received your prior, qualifying STEM degree in the U.S. within 10 years of applying for the STEM OPT extension.

Is there a resource list of employers participating in E-Verify?

No, there is no public list of employers participating in E-Verify.

When to Apply?

You can submit Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization and all required documents to ISS up to 90 days before your current post-completion OPT employment authorization expires.

You may not apply for STEM OPT extensions during the 60-day grace period of post-completion OPT.

To apply for an extension, you must properly file:

Form I-765 with the application fee on or after May 10, 2016,
Form I-20, Certificate of Eligibility for Non-immigrant Student Status, endorsed by your DSO on or after May 10, 2016, and
A copy of your STEM degree.

How can I check the status of my case?

Students may use the receipt number (followed by 10 numbers such as YSC1234567890) that is provided on the receipt notice to track the status of their application on the USCIS website.

TIME LIMITS & DATES

If I am outside of the US and unemployed, does that count as unemployment time?

Yes, any time you are unemployed, whether you’re in the US or outside, counts against your 150-day allotment.

After my STEM OPT extension ends, do I have a grace period?

Yes, you have a grace period of 60 days

Which documents do I need when I travel on STEM OPT?
  • Passport (valid 6 months into the future)
  • Valid F-1 visa
  • Valid EAD card
  • Proof of employment (e.g. a job offer)
  • Most recent I-20 with a valid travel signature on page 2 (must be within 6 months on the date of re-entry)
